I think it's an interesting obeservation of human nature to note how people choose to perceive this issue. We all filter our perception of events according to our values. If we are taught to take care of the environment when we are young, we tend to do that. If we are taught that environmental events are connected to something that is spiritually motivated, we tend to see these events in that context. If we are not taught anything about the way we interact with the environment when we are young, we tend to devalue environmental concerns as a political issue, because we were not taught that this is important. Some people will go beyond this and attempt to reform their perceptions based on the views of more than one source. This is education, and it's sadly in a state of decline in the United States.

Unfortunately, here's the rub regarding the environment: the environment responds directly to our actions, not our perceptions. We will affect the environment according to what we do, not what we think. So, I try to encourage everyone I know, whether they are liberal or conservative, to take action in any small or large way to benefit the environment.

I never ask people to change their views. Not only is that ineffective, but it's also not my place. I just ask them to change one thing to help the environment: recycle, walk to the local park instead of drive once in a while, buy something locally rather than from a large "chain-store", etc.

I hope this post can spark some responses. But beyond that, I hope we can all help people change the way they live just a little bit.

"If we are taught to take care of the environment when we are young, we tend to do that."
I 100% agree on it.Educate next generation to protect environment right now.
But I think it is more important to develop our scientific technology(such as "green chemistry") to cure the earth warmming than to limit our cost of fuel.Anyway, the gross of economy will grow up and the population of world become larger and larger.
In a word,we must do some actions immediately.

This is a perfect example of how perception affects the issue of global warming. The media plays such a huge role in how we percieve our world. I didn't know of the misinformation campaign referred to in this clip, but it does not surprise me. Thanks very much for this!

I hope that enough people are sufficiently alarmed by the climate changes in their own immediate environments, so that perception of global warming will no longer be an issue, and more people will take action. But thanks again for posting this!

Exxon Mobil donated something like $19 million to that misinformation campaign.

It's a drop in the sea for them. They can afford it. Unfortunately spreading lies is popular nowdays. But no matter how many times u repeat it, a lie it doesn't become a truth. The truth eventually comes out on the surface. Hopefully not to late...

It shouldn't shock me, but it still does. I guess I'll consider my shock a good thing and not succumb to cycnicism. I wasn't outraged until I paid attention, as they say.

I think I understand what you mean. I like to tell myself that I've seen and been through enough that I'm not easily shocked. And for the most part that is true. But this does! And here I am, shocked that I'm shocked.

it's suprising that some of you are shocked, don't you know that "what goes around comes around"? why cry wolf where there is none; the preservation of nature and its accessories had been a thing of contention and is still contentious till tomorrow. deforestation, minning and logging were the genesis of what you call "ozone what"? adresses the main issue, don't leave leprousy and labour yourself in search for cure of ring worm. All comments are welcomed.
