Info over Global Warming

The Sun sends energy in the form of radiation to the Earth. The Earth reflects approximately 30% of the incident solar flux. The remaining 70% is absorbed, allowing the land, atmosphere and oceans to warm up to a livable temperature.

Since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century, the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, and deforestation has caused the concentrations of heat-trapping "greenhouse gases" to increase significantly in our atmosphere. This causes less heat to reflect and more to be absorbed.

According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) there will be a global temperature increase of 1.4 - 5.8°C from 1990-2100. The increase in temperature will cause a rise in sea levels, extreme storms and diseases such as Malaria, Dengue Fever, Encephalitis and Hantavirus. It is predicted that we will lose nearly a quarter of the Earth’s animal and plant species by 2050.

It is time to make a change. This group is a place for us all to discuss the latest news, possible ways for change, and anything related to climate change.

An Inconvenient Truth
If you haven't seen this yet, do your self a favor and buy, or at least rent it! If you purchase this Documentary on Amazon, a percentage of the profits go to a new effort, the Alliance for Climate Protection, to educate the public about global warming. If you have seen it: What are your thoughts about the film? Did you learn more about this issue than you knew prior? Did it change the way you think about Global Warming, or spark some sort of change, even a small one, in your own life? Would you recommend it to those people who write Global Warming off as a joke?

Time for a change
Reversing the effects of Global Warming is a massive project to say the least. It will take time and a collective effort. Major changes must be made. However we can not just lie down and give in to this climate crisis. There are small steps we can take in our everyday lives to work toward improving our atmosphere. We must be more efficient with energy use, use fossil fuels responsibly, and promote renewable energies, such as Wind Power, Hydroelectric and Solar Energy and Biofuel. What steps do you take, big or small, to work towards preventing this catastrophe we call Global Warming? Any suggestions for those willing to make a change, but don't know where to start?

2 new bills
The Sanders-Boxer Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act (S. 309) and the Waxman Safe Climate Act (HR. 1590) have been introduced to Congress as a way to reduce emissions and promote energy efficiency.

What do YOU do to stop global warming?
OK, here's your chance to sound off on what you do, or what you want to do, to help stop global warming. I'll start it off. I'm open to suggestions, criticisms, and praise; but mainly we want to know what YOU want to do to help! Here's what I do to help stop global warming: I bicycle almost everywhere I go I ride public transit I recycle I buy locally grown food I only use utilities when truly needed I support politicians who support the environment I donate to organizations who support the environment I attend political functions that support the environment This is all I can think of for now, but I think it's a good start at least. Ok, so what do you do???

The Ozone Hole
"This earth has been made for us to live in it with the rest of the other living creatures, so protecting it and not contaminating it is one of our responsibilities. However sometimes we do contaminate it with some pollution from products that is beneficial to us in daily life and once we realize that we did a big and a serious damage like the big hole in the ozone layer, which is categorized under global warming issues, we start to look for answers to reduce or remove the contamination from our precious environment. Moreover in my opinion if there are solutions and no one is following them or they are stubborn then nothing will be done and all what the collective global community say will be gone with the wind. In addition if a small group followed what this community says and it has been successful and with some help to our environment then that will be a great motivation to bring more people and our environment will be safer and much greater place to live in." -mysteriousdragone
