One Bono For One Campaign To Wipe Out Poverty
(CBS) CHICAGO U2 frontman Bono visited Chicago, where he brought a little "star power" to a new campaign. The One Campaign is a global effort to help wipe out poverty in Africa. The mega-star and his wife are working with an American designer to start a new trend and inspire social consciousness. “They’re made in Africa, with African cotton and $10 from every shirt goes to a fund to fight AIDS,”said Ali Hewson, Bono's wife. Hewson is hoping Americans will rally behind this cause with the same passion she and her husband, Bono, have for the project. Visits to Africa inspired Hewson to create “"Edun" -- a clothing label with American designer Rogan Gregory. “We started Edun because we thought people were asking for choice, a choice to have beautiful clothes that also weren't made from someone else's distress,” Hewson said. All three presented their new “One” T-shirt to 200 shoppers at the Nordstrom on Michigan Ave. Saturday. The retail giant is selling the shirts exclusively. “Just by buying a $40 T-shirt you could be saving someone's life, “Gregory added.”And you look half-way decent too, we hope!” “You're getting involved in the One Campaign and you're showing your support. There's already 2.5 million people signed up -- that's a lot of voices," she said. Bono clearly hopes his global marketing campaign will have an impact on American politics. “If this continues, by the next presidential race, we could be as big as the National Rifle Association and that turns me on! We're going to be the NRA for the poor," Bono said. But Bono and Hewson emphasize the T-shirt project is not charity, it's a business that will help people in Africa help themselves. Another goal of the campaign is to urge the American federal government to give more money to help Africa. According to campaign press release, the European countries are giving much more financial help than the United States. Campaign literature states allocating an additional one percent of the U.S. percent of the U.S. budget toward providing basic needs like health, education, clean water, and food would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the world's poorest countries. "One" also calls for debt cancellation, trade reform, and anti-corruption measures in a comprehensive package to help Africa and the world's poorest nations beat AIDS and extreme poverty.
