New Music: Screaming Females
Untitled Document

With the band Screaming Females, Marissa Paternoster has been known to shred until her fingers bleed. But with her 5-year-old low-profile solo project Noun, Marissa dedicates less time to shrieking and soloing, and more to intricate studio work and lower-key instrumentation.

Holy Hell, the first official Noun release, incorporates keys, organs, and toned-down guitars and drums. The result is clearly different than Screaming Females: it's mellower, more melodic, and whereas the Screaming Females' songwriting process is a three-way discussion, Marissa writes all of the songs for Noun.

Similarly to Screaming Females, Marissa's friends are an important part of Noun. Holy Hell features drum work by Angela Boylan (of Cheeky), Miranda Taylor (Hunchback, Black Wine, Full of Fancy), and Jarrett Dougherty (Screaming Females), plus bass lines by King Mike (Screaming Females). Her Mom designed the artwork, and her friends at New Brunswick label Don Giovanni are releasing the record.

Just as Screaming Females' signature DIY mindset was born out of necessity (having nowhere to play shows led to booking their own, having no one to release their records led to self-releasing), Marissa's solo project was also born organically. As a teenager she wanted to be in a band, but couldn't find people to play with. Instead of waiting to find band-mates, Marissa played all of the instruments herself and recorded her own songs on her father's laptop.

By the time Marissa started college at Rutgers University, she had around 40 songs recorded. She burned them to CD-Rs and packaged them with Xeroxed artwork. She then passed them around at Rutgers and mailed them to friends. A Noun song on an obscure compilation is even what ultimately led to her meeting Screaming Females drummer Jarrett, which led to the band's inception.

Holy Hell surfaced naturally over the past year when Marissa began an internship at the Hunt Studio in New Jersey in 2009. She began recording Noun songs in her downtime which eventually evolved into a full length album. The 12-track album is set for release in June 2010.

Don Giovanni Records is holding a two-night showcase / mini-festival at the Mercury Lounge April 24 and 25, with Screaming Females performing the first night and Noun the second night.

New Video: These New Puritans
Untitled Document

Featuring vocals by Heather Marlatt of dream-pop group Salem, a taiko drum, and Foley techniques and more, the aptly titled “Attack Music” is perhaps one of the most immediate, yet abrasive and foreboding songs off of These New Puritans’ new album, Hidden (Domino). The track additionally incorporates vocals by the New London Children’s Choir, recorded on a mobile set-up. Of course, These New Puritans are not the first to use children’s voices this way, however, none have quite achieved the eerie, Greek Chorus-like air of Hidden.

The “Attack Music” video was directed by Matthew Stone, an up and coming London-based artist.

New Video: We Have Band
Untitled Document

2010 has all the makings of a year to remember for We Have Band. Having recently signed their album to Naïve, France's biggest independent record label, the London-based three-piece are now getting set for a full European live tour, a summer of festivals and the release of their debut album ‘WHB’ this May.

It may actually surprise you that they’ve still only released three official singles to date; such has been their impact since bursting onto the live scene in 2008. Praised by both fans and critics alike,Thomas, Dede and Darren have done most of their work on the road, wowing crowds and forcing people to dance across Europe, Russia and North America (and all without a label!).

Having started last year with a fantastic first experience of SXSW, the band went on to release their second single ‘You Came Out’ through Kill Em All, remix the likes of Bloc Party, Micachu and Peter Bjorn and John, and head to their first ever Glastonbury Festival as winners of the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Contest. The band followed that by performing notable high turnout sets atLatitude, Great Escape and Secret Garden and recently completed the recording of their debut 12-track LP with the help of producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, These New Puritans).

‘Divisive’, taken from the album encapsulates everything that people have come to love from WHB, combining multi-layered percussion with high rising synths, punk-funk bass and entwined vocals. One of the charms that We Have Band possess is their ability to share the limelight, each using their talents to get the maximum out of every song they perform. 'Divisive' is no different, acting as the perfect taster for what's to come in May with their debut LP. Backed up with an amazing remix package, it’s safe to say this is coming soon to dancefloor near you.

Tracklist:
1. Divisive (Radio Edit)
2. Divisive (Tom Staar remix)
3. Divisive (French Fries remix)
4. Divisive (Flak Attack remix)
5. Divisive (Gohan Remix)
6. Divisive (Carl Craig remix) - Beatport exclusive
7. Divisive (DJ Mujava ) - Beatport Exclusive
8. Divisive (Stopmakingme Remix)

Toro Y Moi
Untitled Document

Toro Y Moi (a.k.a. Columbia, South Carolina's Chaz Bundick) is the sound the world has been waiting for. This multi-cultural juggernaut gathers up the best musical elements from around the globe- R&B, Indie Rock, Electronic Dance and Psychedelica -and creates something-freaking-else! Over the course of his first groundbreaking full length Causers Of This, Toro Y Moi turns the aforementioned musics upside-down with his breathtakingly innovative approach. The incendiary power of Toro Y Moi's funky synth and guitar play, pumping digital rhythms and gorgeously bright vocal harmonies makes for a formidable combination. A soon to be masterpiece of a currently unnamed genre.

Bio:
Toro Y Moi is 23 year old Columbia, South Carolina native and resident Chaz Bundick. After earning a BFA in Graphic Design at The University of South Carolina, Chaz decided to push his music further now that he has more time on his hands. His mom came from the Phillipines to the United States, where she met her future husband (who's African American) in college. They lived in New York City taking in all the wonderful cultural influences the city's rising underground scene had to offer at the time (late 70s/early 80s). Deciding to slow down and be closer to family, they moved to Columbia, South Carolina where they had their first child...

Chaz Bundick's methods are constantly changing and evolving. Heavily influenced by his parent's vinyl and tape collection, he also possesses great admiration for contemporary influences like Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, J Dilla, and Daft Punk. Like most prepubescent teens, he had his punk band and once that died out, the "side project" soon became the main focus.

Toro y Moi started in 2001 as a bedroom project but quickly grew into the live performance realm. The songs are born from a plethora of different genres, from freak-folk to R&B to French House.

Light Pollution Signs to Carpark Records
Untitled Document

Midwesterners often feel obligated to apologize for/complain about their landscape. Chicago's Light Pollution does not. The contrasting feelings of wonderment and isolation evoked by the frozen Midwestern plains deeply pervade their sound.

23-year-old songwriter James Michael Cicero grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the son of Italian and Spanish Catholics. His grandfather was a first-generation Spanish immigrant trumpet player who moved to Chicago to lead a Big Band; aspirations that did not ensure financial stability. As a result, when Cicero bought his first guitar at the age of seventeen, his father took to locking it in the attic.

Cicero left for college in Dekalb, IL, met drummer Matt Evert, obsessively wrote songs in class, and soon dropped out. Over the following years, the two honed their skills and sensibilities, eventually acquiring Nick Sherman and Jed Robertson; evolving into what is now Light Pollution.

Swirling analog synths, shimmering arpeggios, and washed out tape noise are embedded into combinations of 90's shoegaze, chillwave, and vocal psych-pop. Thanks to a unique blend of hi-fi and lo-fi tracking and their Midwestern demeanor, they are able to create hazy, psychedelic, layered sounds that set them apart from recent waves of lo-fi pop bands.

Light Pollution is finishing up their full length debut, due out on Carpark this summer. Cicero wrote the album over the course of a long, stoned, agoraphobic winter spent isolated in a heatless warehouse west of Chicago.
